On sharing a bond for life

A relationship between siblings is defined by longevity.

It is one of the most important relationships you can have with someone; a perpetual existence that binds you together not just through genes, but through a lifetime of shared experiences.

It is through these connections that we develop emotional bonds and mutual compassion, learning the importance of sharing, patience and having forgiveness for one another along the way.

We lift each other up when it’s needed.

We sometimes argue, and sometimes cry together.

We almost always laugh.

We conspire against the world with unconditional love and loyalty.

Because that’s what being someone’s sibling means.

So, dearest Sal. On this very special ‘big’ birthday that shall remain numberless, can I remind myself how lucky I am to have you as my big sister? Thank you for taking care of me and protecting me when I needed it most. For all the sacrifices you made, and the things you missed out on so I wouldn’t. Thank you.

We may not be as cute or innocent as we were back in 1979 when this first image was taken. We may have both gotten a little grey (and bald in my case), a little cantankerous and a tad bit squidgy around the edges.

But we’re still here, together.

Happy Birthday. I love you very much ❤️
